Which of these two BBC intake would you run and why

Post by 1980RS »

I have two dual plane intakes to try on a Sq. Port BBC 468. One is a 163 and the other is a Weiand dual plane with the divider cut out that is the way Weiand make it. Which is the better of the two in you opinion?

what are your cam specs and compression? what do you plan to do with said 468?

if you plan on not going up in RPM use the smaller less divided plenum. if you plan on more rpm use the larger plenum.

You could always coat the intake gasket in clear silicone, let it dry. Then spray it with mold release, and try both intakes. the gasket will be reusable, but you will have to re RTV the china .

Both good choices. The Weiand is such a close copy of the 163 that's it's a coin toss.

I'm doubtful you'd tell any difference.... short of being on a dyno.

The 163 dual plane Chevy BB intake is solid up to 6800 RPM's. The Weiand Intake in your picture is an exact replica of the Chevy 198 BB Intake used on the ZL-1-L-88 427 Engines. These ZL-1-L-88 designs would run strong in the upper 7.000 RPM's range. Most copied the Chevy BB intake design which is top notch. Chevy designed a special Holley Carb to use with the 198 intake, or your Weiand with special tabs used on the carb venturi's. On this design with the divider milled out cylinders would lean out. But this special Holley 4296 cured the lean condition along with staggered jetting. Personally i would try both intakes. That 163 dual plane Chevy intake is pretty good intake. This dual plane will give you better low range mid range throttle response where your Weiand will be suited for higher RPM's. I used both intakes. I tried the 198 Chevy open plenum milled divider on my 468 BB Chevy drag motor with the correct 4296 carb. It ran very well. But i didnt tweek and test that combination due to the MSD Ignition box failing with a bad miss. So i stopped to get that fixed and ended up selling the drag car. What is your plan with this 468 engine? Street or strip? You didnt give enough info on your compression and cam specs and your choice. If it's a street perf engine go with the 163 dual plane. If it's a street and strip. your Weiand intake with the milled out plenum, or single plane intake is your best choice but only with the right carb choice and stagger jetting. This is my tested opinion. Good luck.

Also let me add, the factory 4296 carb specially designed for this intake was reworked and tweeked by Clark Holroyd, top carburetor rebuilder for racing engines. If you dont have the correct carb, talk to Pro Systems carb specialist listed in Muskegon Mich. I used their carb for my single plane intake setup.

The 468 is a mostly strip only car, 10.2 compression with 934 mild ported Square Port heads. Comp 288AR10 cam and a plethora of different 4150 carbs to try out. 1 7/8" header that have a 3.5" collector, 8" TCI converter, 4.10 gear car.

Reading your info, personally i would try both intakes and see how each performs. The 163 Chevy dual plane intake you show in the pic is a very good intake manifold and will run strong up to 7000 RPMs. Just watch the stock eliminator class in NHRA and the guys who run these 163 intakes on their 396-427 Chevy engines. Impressive. I believe your low and mid range power will be better with the 163 also. But it doesn't take long to swap out intakes. Give both a try.
