I have one in the metrology box. Haven't used it in years.

Back in the day, all OEM Shop Manuals had a bore taper specification. Less than .005", for example, it could be re-ringed with original pistons.

Along with the dial bore gauge had to be a bore ridge reamer.
ImageIn the wrong hands, these would do terrible things to the tops of the cylinder bores.

When we shred an old engine, run 100,000 miles with a carburetor, it's not unusual to find .010" ridge at the top of the cylinders, might not clean up with a .030" overbore. Engines built with EFI and a computer run 250,000 will often still show the honing crosshatch; could be rebuilt without a overbore.
