Timing Set Question... single vs. double roller

Post by Krooser » Tue Mar 24, 2020 1:29 am

I have a 99.9% new timing set I pulled out of a SBM that never ran a mile. The guy replaced the timing set and started the engine but never drove it..sold the car w/o the engine. Not sure of the brand... iron cam sprocket. Nothing fancy.

I would use this thing in my project engine (SBM)... I have a shop that tells me single row chains are fine but double rollers are what sells.

I've likely assembled more engines without double rollers... I'm old enough to remember not having them invented being yet. Chevys, Fords Mopars... never used them.

I know I'll get gruff if I cheapen out on the timing set... my preference is an SA with an IWIS chain. Used a few of those.

But really... how many timing sets have you seen fail in an engine that gets pulled apart every off season?

i agree w/ what shop says about T sets on Both points.
Dunno what the mix is at the 'burg, but look at all those GM 602, 603, 604 crates: all single rollers; some morse linkbelt
Good quality single roller aok for a season; much longer on street. Most have 1/2" pitch chain Of course Not if huge roller springs
Also agree SA w/ iwis is aok.

I have single and double row Cloyes basic cheaper true rollers for my sbc. The single roller chain is slightly heavier. LS have a single roller factory chain I think. As the guy said double rollers sell, two is better than one right? There was a discussion on here and I rem stuff bout a guy who said better power with single and maybe harmonics, think I commented on it but can't rem. Just makes sense to me that a single is simpler.

I know as much as I can learn and try to keep an open mind to anything!

If I didn't overthink stuff I wouldn't be on speedtalk!

Boot... I remember that thread. That's what instigated all this...
