50 degree Seat Angle Valve Job on Vertical Mill with Peterson Rollover Fixture
new Valve Depths created matching pair of Heads to +- 0.001" of inch all seat depths

Hey Larry, I hope you don’t mind my asking and you don’t have to say if you don’t want to, but these heads don’t have a burr finish. Will they get a burr finish or do they not need/like that finish?

1st Post at top has 2 Flow Sheets of Data
1st Flow Sheet was a few years ago ,
reason i Flow tested them back then was i just re-Valve Jobbed all 8 Exhaust Seats
Customer purchased these Heads bolted them on a 468cid BBC and all 8 Exhaust Seats were leaking
he quickly removed Heads and i re-Valve Jobbed on my Vertical Mill ,
all 8 exh seats were a mile off out-the-box from ProFiler
sealing only 1/4 way around at most ... someone at Profiler setup exh side tilt wrong !
Good thing he didn't run them very long , could have broken Head off Exhaust Valves ??
All 8 Intake Seat Valve Job were perfect from Profiler !
now they are going to BBC 632 cid Engine with these Heads
so i fully Ported them ... i used the new Valves they supplied
i would have chosen a 2.300 OD Valve and a 1.840 OD Exh Valve Combo instead
it would have easily Flowed in the 400+ CFM range

they were all Burr-finished , but not with a rough burr , instead with a fine finish Burr,
i just decided to 80-Grit Roll finish them instead ... i hadn't polished any Ports in years , so i did these that way !
i always do the Valve Job 1st
and Port Heads off the Valve Job
.... everything is done from the point of view of Valve Job seat or Lap Line
i use Beechem Red layout Dye , then while head is still on Vertical Mill ,
i do about a 5 second Seat/Valve Lapping ... so while i Port the Heads i can always instantly see where my Seat Angle is
and double-check where Lap line contact is on the Valve itself !
i use Goodson 3D Tooling + Cutters
+ custom made Pilot seat alignment setup for Vertical Mill
i robbed the Rollover Fixture from my Peterson Seat and Guide machine
and bolted it on my Vertical Mill instead

Very nice work and great gains as allways,May i ask you 2 questions. What cam lift do you consider going from 45 to 50 seat? And the benefit of a port that does not back up even though you are only lifting say 750? Thanks in advance.

I was surprised they didn't have more .200-.300 in stock condition.
I always thought they were a pretty hi velocity port.
I never had the chance to work a set.

it depends a lot on the Chamber shape
and transition from Bowl -to- Chamber thru the Valve Job angles
for Valve Lift range where 50deg Intake Seat Angle works usually better than 45deg ,
it would be around 0.30 Lift/Diameter Ratio and higher
Exh side would be around 0.38 Lift/Diameter Ratio and higher
difference between 45deg -vs- 50deg Seat Angles is only 5.0deg
so its easy to grind 45deg Valves to 50deg without loosing too much Valve margin
however, the greater the Seat Angles from 50deg towards 60deg ... you progressively loose Low -to- around Mid-Lift Flow Numbers
and need very Hi-Lift Cams to take most advantage of those steeper Angles
the Sonny's Big Block Chevy Hemi style Heads had 2.900/2.100 Valve combo
the 2.900 Int Valve had 60.0 deg Seat Angles for a 1.300" Valve Lift Cam
the 2.100 Exh Valve had 55.0 deg Seat Angles for a 1.315" Valve Lift Cam
121.0 LSA
the 2.900 Int Valve starts Flowing very well around 0.30 Lift/Diameter Ratio=0.870 Lift and higher all the way to 1.400"+ Lift tested
Also : i grind old Int and Exh Valves to 60deg Angle and razor sharp margins
and drop them in on newly cut 45deg or 50,55 deg Seats to protect seats while i grind in the Combustion Chambers
and grinding them to 60deg angle is so much quicker to get a razor sharp margin
if you ground a 45 deg angle it would take seemingly forvever to reduce the margin enough
wearing out your Grinding Stone a lot sooner for nothing !

if the Intake Port CFM stalls or backs-up at higher Lifts than the Cam you are using at 28.0" inches on the Flowbench ,And the benefit of a port that does not back up even though you are only lifting say 750
it has problems : because if its doing that under Steady-State "DRY Flow conditions"
whats going to really happen when its a Air/Fuel Mixture and a lot higher Cylinder depression rate than steady 28.0" inches
in old Days in NHRA with mostly real Legal SuperStock Heads
some SBC Engine had 0.390"/0.410" Lift Cams, so when NHRA allowed Roller Cams
the quickest most HP Cars had 0.650" to 0.750" Lift Cams
even though the Intake Port stalled or went backwards at around 0.400" to 0.450" Lift
because if you used only a 0.450 Roller Cam you might have accessed that Flow number for 3 to 6 degrees worth
but if you installed a 0.750" Cam you accessed .400" to .450" Lift Flow for about 50-80 degrees worth ?? ... so it was worth a bunch of HP,
so even though the Port stalled , the Engine accessed that amount of Flow for a much longer time period , so it made more HP .
........Note : if you would have Ported those same Heads and fixed the Stall or backing up problem, it would have made even more HP
Also, you should checkout if Intake Port will Stall or backup with the Intake Manifold on
and see if it still Stalls at the same Valve Lift ???
Usually bolting on Intake Manifold or Intake Manifold w/Carb on will extend the point or Valve Lift
another 0.050" to 0.100" Lift before it displays the same Stall or backup problem .

it can hide Port problems from you
i'll never put one on my SF-600 Bench

Is that the original intake valve with 45 deg seat? looks like it only has a thin seat with no backcut. Larry, very nice work! Could you comment on the placement of the seat on the intake VS exhaust on the valve. In other words the noticeable distance from the margin vs the two. I do the same just curious your reasoning why.

Valve Face Seat widths = ? i didn't measure exactly how wide they were ??
Intake Valves have Backcuts ... no room to backcut the Exh Valves

from my measurements ,the Profiler/Raylar has 2.280" Seat Insert OD
and 1.840" Exh Seat Insert OD
so i cut a 1.840" 50 deg Exh seat angle up to same as Insert OD
and the 1.880 Exh Valve on a 1.840 Seat Angle is what you are seeing
Also i had a Titanium Tulip Valve 1.820" OD w/0.120" thick Margin
that i Flow tested it againt the 1.880 Valve on a 1.840 Seat
and the 1.820 was a a few CFM better , not much gain
Then i Flow tested a 1.840 Exh Valve on a 1.840 Seat
and again not much CFM gain
If it would have made larger Exh Flow gains
i would have cut down the 1.880 Valves to 1.840
but i left them alone
Also , i would have went with a 2.300 Int Valve on the 2.280 Seat insert
or cut down 2.300 Valve down to 2.280.... either way , Heads would have been in 410 + CFM Range instead of 398-399 CFM
best Combo = 2.300/1.840 or 2.280/1.840
a 2.300 Intake Valve is an extremely small Valve for a BBC Chevy , especially for 600+ CID engine
