Dyno Racing

Post by MaxEnglish »

Will we ever see dyno racing again in the USA. Looks like Race Engine Challenge and Masters Of Motors
have nothing planned. I always learned some looking at all the combinations and seeing realistic numbers that most likely have correct dyno correction factors.

Different "States of the Union" have different Covid mandates and when that all gets straightened away ... it will probably return.

The contest would have gone on as planned last year but, the state of Ohio would not allow it.
Now it does seem to have lost the interest of the main companies involved with its promotion so, I can only hope it will return, somewhere.

If anyone does a contest again there should be a payday for "all contestants" who make a score and not letting all the money going to just the
top one or two.

That would require major sponsors, or maybe Pay-per-View streaming for the 12 people that would pay to watch it.

I know this isn’t a griping thread, but as a spectator, I really lost all interest after they neutered the series after 2013. The vintage class was interesting up until the Smithberg/Adams Hemi and Kaase Y Block, but again, that was neutered as well.

The reason we started Race Engine Challenge back in 2018 was because the Engine Masters Challenge (EMC) had "neutered" the rules and later
Masters Of Motors took a page out of the EMC book and their most resent rules were really watered down.
With input from several former EMC players we came up with rules that represented strong street/strip engines. Even though we have no contest
scheduled you can still see the rules on the web page and we "always" encouraged ideas to be sent in.

Also, when we started in 2018 we thought we would run it for three years (Covid stopped 2020) and hoped that someone else would pick it up from there. What would change this for us is if Hot Rod Magazine (HRM) would cover a contest (it would actually be a good fit given their magazine demographics) and then maybe a good sponsor would then come in and a good show could be put on. Anybody know anyone at HRM?

Why not start a competition here on Speed Talk.

Make up some general rules that would cover a majority of engines shops are building for their customers and when they dyno they can post combination specs and results.

I know it would not be a level playing field due to different dynos, policing, conditions etc but it might be close enough for an interesting post competition, or not lol

Same rules, same location, same dyno, same general time ... that is the whole point.

I understand the point of the competition but the way things are today, it may not be realistic.

The thought was more of a "gentlemen's" competition that would be interesting and informative for the readers.

What about doing both?

Write a set of rules for 1 to 3 different classes.
Anyone that would like to compete, would build their engine, dyno tune it to a specific testing procedure, then send in their results, along with an entry fee.
Results are not made public until after all entries are received.
Top 3 and 1 or 2 alternates are then invited to the finals, where they will be dynoed on the same dyno, on the same day.

Of course, people could cheat, and fudge the numbers they send in with the entry fee, but why would anyone do that, just to look bad at the finals?

The earliest EMC events had regional qualifying with the top 3(?) from each region invited to the finals at a single location.
