clear coating engine
I have an aluminum engine i want to clear coat. What have you used that seems to work and hold up?
Re: clear coating engine
Not aluminum but I've used VHT clear caliper paint on cast iron heads. Durability was OK however they were a little discolored after a while.

Re: clear coating engine
Is the goal shiny? Or just protection...
Id think spi clear epoxy might be nice... satin tho..
You might be able to go clear epoxy for adhesion then a cost of clear 2 pack automotive stuff for shinyness...
Black paint on a car gets hotter in the summer sun than an engine does so theres no real reason to think itll fail..
id probably go thinner coats the better too..

Ooooooooh!
Ill tell you what you might need..
Track down nyalic..
Its a single pack product, sticks to alloy without a keyed surface..
We used to use it on alloy wheels, and we would acid wash 18 wheeler tanker trailers and fertiliser trailers then paint them with it...
We would also spray yellowed car headlights with it from the aerosol can to fix them..
Ive not seen it in the states since moving here, but i havnt looked hard either.. that could be an ok option..

For the best clear gloss or matte finish that will outlast your engine, investigate the Cerakote product line
of ceramic coatings.
of ceramic coatings.

Re: clear coating engine
Traditional methods, SPI Adhesion Promoter activated with SPI Clearcoat activator, followed by the SPI clear of your choice. This method holds up nicely.
Check spiuserforum.com for more details. Best body and paint forum on the internet. I'm active there and will help guide you through the process if you post your questions. Barry at SPI is a class act.
Non traditional I would second the cerakote recommendation. They have some products that give amazing results. They are very thin coatings as well, which helps in certain applications.

Re: clear coating engine
Automotive finishes with proper prep works well on both aluminum and cast iron

Look to the marine sector if it’s aluminum protection you’re after

Be aware that many automotive finishes are now water based and are quite porous and do seal very well.

Porous or seals well? Can't be both can it?David Redszus wrote: ↑Wed Aug 10, 2022 11:26 am Be aware that many automotive finishes are now water based and are quite porous and do seal very well.

When I said automotive finishes work well above, I had urethanes in my mind. Forgot all about water
