industrial chrome plating

Post by HeinzE »

I'm looking for a shop that can do industrial chrome plating on a couple of pivot shafts. The shafts are roughly 1.25" OD and 14" long.
I've been using 4130 unplated but am not getting the wear resistance I need.

Where are you located?

We have a good shop here in Spokane and those shafts would fit in the flat USPS Large Flat Rate Box.

4130 unplated -
how hard is it now?
Flame or induction might get it up to HRC 45 or so.

Kasenit, now Cherry red case hardening compound.

Just revcently I saw something about nanny-California trying to ban nasty ol' chrome plating in the State. Probably with an eye to banning ALL electro-plating out of acids. Typical.

Dan, that would be case hardening with the 1018?,, not much carbon in the parent metal to work with.
Your process for the 4140 is a good option if the OP has facility to finish grind.[that is if he needs a certain surface finish] If he goes with hard chrome, the finish grind is the platers responsibility usually.[at least at the guys i use] Also he would have to either machine undersize for the chrome build up or get the hard chromers to grind ,chrome ,grind, which they will charge for the extra prep process.

Have you considered nitriding? Very common process for AISI 4130.

I don't think I saw if a metal or plastic bushing or a needle bearing runs on the shaft.
