Should I follow it up with a 400 grit, or finer?
or is that 320 ball hone enough?

I’ve used 320 ball hone on steel and moly rings and still haven’t had any problems with the rings not sealing it just would take a few more passes 2or3 to get the leak down better.

Pics loaded in backwards, so the one at the top is number 8,6,4,2. 7/5/3/1

1/3/4 being the worst as far as gouges

Is it possible to clock the rings so the gouges aren't an issue?
Fingernail catches but they are very small gouges in thickness, not wide.

They're gonna move anyway, though maybe not too much with that 0 to 10 degree hone and those gouges to guide them, amazing how well some run even with wrist pin gouges.
Radius the ends, lightly.
Hope for the best.

Also, clean up fire ring around cyl.

Pistons when measured were .022 in the hole. Mag told me about that issue on the oil rings etc, definitely something I have to get done.

Seems it's already +40 over and just got ball-honed; but that hasn't cleaned it up very well.
In the long run, me thinks another block might be a practical fix.

Better pics, more light. 1&4 in the pics. I’m on a budget, so I’m debating on what to do.

The problem that usually occurs with a out of round bore using low tension oil ring is it will push alot of oil into catch can.
Measuring with a dial bore gauge doesn't tell the whole story.
I would bolt cylinder head to block, sit in a 2nd ring at desired gap and shine a light from behind the ring and see how it looks.
You can use a standard tension oil ring which might be a better option.

I agree. I would run the ball hone a few more passes with faster up and down motion to put more crosshatch in it. If this is a street engine I would definitely use a standard tension oil ring. You will have oil consumption with a low tension ring on the street.

in the above thread, it seems this 383+ sbc motor is in a 3200 pound dirt track race car

Perhaps OP 88bluestar will clarify if this is same motor?

This is an engine I was planning to build. Depending how this block turns out with the bore issue I may have to wait off doing the 383 for a while and use the other block. Just trying to get as much info together since I've never done a 383.
