Head gasket heat transfer

Post by bthomas »

Would there be an advantage to running an mls gasket over a standard in regards to heat transfer?
Standard meaning a fiber based with copper ring.. say a fel pro 1010. For Iron block and aluminum heads.

In electronics we use something called heat sink compound.
This is like a grease and is applied to semiconductors which get hot and the heat sink they are bolted to.

The compound fills in the microscopic pits on the metal face of both the semiconductor and the heat sink to aid in maximizing that area for heat transfer.

Only a very thin film of the compound is needed.

Along these same lines for a cylinder head you would then want both the block and head surfaces to be mirror like in there finish and run a steel shim head gasket and with a O-ring if needed.
This should help heat transfer somewhat.

PS.
This heat sink compound is what is / should be used to mount HEI modules in Distributors , not spark plug silicone grease like some folks use and then wonder why there replacing the module yet again!

What does copper spray do?

probably more of an insulator, than an aid to heat transfer.

There are advantages of using a MLS but in my opinion not enough to say thermal transfer really as one. I'd bet cooling mods would be far more effective for w/e your trying to achieve.

Not shooting for anything other than knowledge. Just something that crossed my mind, and I didn’t see it mentioned anywhere before

Block and head bulk temperature regulation is handled by the coolant circulation.

OTOH, consider cast-iron exhaust manifolds with no coolant circulating in them. Heat transfer to the cylinder head could be improved with metal gaskets vs. fiber gaskets...or better-still: NO gasket.

Heat transfer from the combustion chamber would be my first concern.
