Helmers Camaro was one of the nicest First Gen Super Stockers I have ever seen. It was really nice!maxracesoftware wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 5:26 pm Dave Layer 's SuperStock Heads were my greatest competition in those Days
honest true Story : ( according to Danny Helmer Sr. )
here's what Danny Helmer Sr. called me up directly from a DragStrip ( not in Division 4 ) i can't remember the NHRA Division ( i think it was in yours )
Danny had just re-set the NHRA Record 9.67 ET , and Danny said they made Danny tear-down for Legal check
NHRA Tech Guy took his Cylinder Head + along with David Layer into small building closed the Door
and did not let Danny go in with them ... Danny said they are still in there , been in there 15-20 minutes , i'll call you back with results !
Danny called me back again and said NHRA Tech Guy said your Legal and Cylinder CC's at 165 cc
Danny told the Tech Guy "ain't that whats it supposed to be"
if you knew Danny , he said things like a Comedian , but it was "Dry Humor"
its just in the way or style he said things !
by Luck, the NHRA Guy CC's the largest Intake Port volume i had out those #041X castings
i had 164.9 CC on that Intake Port the Tech CC'd ... the average of all the rest were 163.9 Intake Port CC's
that was a very close Call
the very 1st pair of Heads i did for Danny Helmer / Patterson Racing
were #462 castings , the Legal Intake Port CC's were 162.0cc max
i made them 157cc Intake Ports with Epoxy just to see what hi-velocity + good Flow CFM would do
on a 4-Speed Manual Trans Car ... Danny set his 1st Record at 9.93 ET with those #462 Heads
... by then i had just finished a series of Dyno tests with Jimmy Faul SBC SS/IA engine
with #462 at 162.0 Legal Limit -VS- #041X with 165.0 cc Legal Limit
the #041X Heads with just 3.0cc more i could use to enlarge way too fast local Port areas
made more HP than #462's + much faster down the Dragstrip too !
Division 4 Tech Guy Mr. Red Anderson told me my Heads were the most Legal he's seen so far !
i never acid-ported any of my Heads , never had to weld Exhaust Ports to make them Flow either .

Re: SuperStock 461X 041X Heads and Dyno tests
I remember in the early 70's "Modified Production" days we used to look for the 461X heads because we could get the intake ports as big as around 198 cc's and the non-X heads would break through at just under 190cc's.
We didn't have a flow bench or a dyno back then but. the ET difference was almost 2 tenths; (that's a lot of power difference).

Thanks for the post with the pictures, what a great body of work you've done over the years!! Harold Bettes always regarded you as a excellent thinker and getting it done type of person. Invaluable in information, thanks! Its worth mentioning "Red Anderson" came up in discussions quite often as well, known for saying "what are you trying to do here".
Racing a NA NHRA stocker should be mandatory before any posting.

It is an honor to be included with this group! I still have plenty to learn, my 041's only flow 275 cfm! Thank you!maxracesoftware wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 6:56 pm "Shout out to all these Head Porters and their YouTube Videos"

Larry, Joesph Elias and myself submitted a Pro-Filer porters core to NHRA. That and a list of shortcomings of the Edelbrock aluminum.
Here is the response. From that date, still no Edelbrock castings available.

In building some Super Stock small block Chevy stuff in 20+ years past, we would get the same heads done by two different places ... Dave Layer intake ports and Steve Sanchez exhaust ports; (no brazing).maxracesoftware wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 5:26 pm Dave Layer 's SuperStock Heads were my greatest competition in those Days

also a Data Correction :
i discovered Danny's real 1st NHRA Record was with my #462 castings at 157 CC Int Port Vol CC's
SS/I Class 1966 Nova 338cid 157cc Intake Port Volume CC's
10.07 ET at 131.20 MPH <--real 1st Record Run
1.35 to 1.39 60Ft range

Alan Patterson's Dyno 600 RPM/SEC
405 to 413 Peak TQ Range
527 to 528 Peak Hp Range <--- 157cc at 600 RPM/SEC
also discovered i used new A1 Intake and Exhaust Valve supplied by Helmer
i think at that time A1 Trans/Converters were selling Valves ????
Edit/Corrections this was "after" they sent Heads back to me
and i removed some Epoxy out of Intake Ports to get 160.5cc to 161.5cc range from 157cc
and also 30.0 Intake Valve BackCut Angle on A1 Valves
Danny Helmer's 1st NHRA Record ET Slip Data <--- correction this was really Danny's 2nd Record
1966 Nova with 4-Speed manual transmission
#462 castings at 160.5cc to 161.5cc range + 30deg Intake Valve Backcuts A1 Valves
3170 Lbs w/Driver SS/H
1.390
4.050
6.305
108.21
8.270
9.935

this is with SBC338cid ( 327cid to NHRA max limit = 338cid )
#462 castings ( NHRA Legal Intake Port max CC Volume = 162.0cc )
Ported by Meaux Racing Heads
this is the same 338cid in 1966 Nova in SS/H Class
some additional Data from Helmer phone call :
6-Finger 9.000" Disc Premier Clutch setup
2.000" open Q-Jet adapter/Carb Spacer
Ron's Porting Sevice 4x4 Intake Manifold
9.0 Lbs Porche Driver + Passenger Seats
Lamb Front and Rear Disc Brakes
SS/H can be 3120 Lbs with 338cid SBC ???
here's another Run Helmer ran in Houston, Texas 3-6-93 National Event
1966 Nova SS/H
SBC 338cid w/#462 castings Ported by Meaux changed to 160.5cc to 161.5cc 30deg Int Backcut
1.328
3.968
6.211
108.55
8.172
9.847
133.63 ... looks like he let-off at 1320 MPH trap, maybe didn't want to hurt Class Index ???
Danny also said he backed-to-back Dyno tested
Ron's Porting Service Edelbrock 4x4 Manifold -VS- Wilson's Manifold
Wilson Manifold 7000RPM to 8000RPM = 557 average HP
Ron's Manifold 7000RPM to 8000RPM = 551 average HP
this was on Salina's Engine Service SF-901 Dyno at 300 RPM/SEc Test Rate ( Salina, Kansas 67401 )
Stahl 2-Step Headers 1.750, 1.875 3.500 Collectors
Jericho 4-Speed Trans 3.08, 1.91, 1.38, 1.00 Ratios

Gear Shifts = around 7800 RPM
VP C-12 Race Gas
Sig Erson Solid Roller Cam specs : 278/284 107 LSA
tested Cam on Intake CL from 103.8 IntCL to 110.8 IntCL
with Cam on 103.8 IntCL Helmer had 0.120/0.120" Valve-to-Piston clearance at zero Lash
with Cam on 110.8 IntCL Helmer had 0.113" Exh Valve-to-Piston clearance zero Lash
best Dyno test HP was with 0.032/0.032 Valve Lash and 36.0 BTDC Ignition advance
with Cam straight up on 107.0 InCL was best overall TQ and HP Curve
... one test w/ Cam retard to 109.0 IntCL was 2nd best overall TQ and HP Curve
... another Dyno test with Cam on 104.0 IntCL was worst result
i only have the Dyno Sheet from the Wilson Intake Manifold test
Peak TQ = 435.0 at 6500 RPM at 300 RPM/SEc Test Rate
Peak HP = 556.4 at 7900 RPM at 300 RPM/SEc Test Rate
.... this is supposed to be Test with Cam on 109.0 IntCL retarded 2.0 degrees from 107.0 IntCl
