Re: Old school ring seating trick ??
We may need to direct Flyboy here if the rebuild doesn't seal up.
Ignorance leads to confidence more often than knowledge does.
Nah, I'm not leaving myself out of the ignorant brigade....at times.

Bon Ami main ingredient is borax.....and adding to the case instructions, I am pretty sure I have read the same instructions for CAT as well....
Re: Old school ring seating trick ??
Borax is Sodium Tetraborate, which is not an ingredient in Bon Aim.
Bon Ami ingredients from Bon Ami website.
Calcium Carbonate (Limestone) - CAS# 1317-65-3
Feldspar Powder - CAS# 68476-25-5
Sodium Carbonate (Soda Ash) - CAS# 497-19-8
Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) - CAS# 144-55-8
C10-C16 Alkylbenzene Sulfonic Acid (Surfactant) - CAS# 68584-22-5
From 20 Mule Team Borax website.
Borax is a naturally occurring compound that is found in arid regions similar to salt plains in Utah or Nevada. The mineral itself is made up of Sodium, Oxygen and Boron to create Sodium Tetraborate (Na2B4O7 • 10H2O) and is mined in Central and Southern California. The compound is considered a salt and actually shares many chemical properties with average table salt.

The Bon Ami recipe might have changed in years gone by and might not even loosely resemble the original product.
I do remember the old timers in my shop commenting on and admitting to using Bon Ami to help the rings seat. And it seems the factory would let them do it, being that the alternative was to tear down or replace the engine anyway, and if it slowed the oil consumption down to "within spec," the factory would save on warranty claims.
With respect to exhaust manifolds on Motorhomes and tow vehicles, those poor buggers live a hard life. I remember towing to a race in SoCal, climbing the grapevine at night, drag racing one of my buddies up the hill, and we both noticed the bright orange glow from the exhausts reflecting off of side of each other's truck. After that, I don't think either of us bitched about broken bolts or cracked exhaust manifolds. And I told this story to one of the GM Field engineers who then commented that GM found through testing that the exhaust can grow up to 4 inches when towing.

"At Daytona in 1963 we snuck into the pits and I watched Smokey Yunick dust a can on Bon Ami cleanser down the carb of a 421 Pontiac engine to seat the rings"
I suspect not too many years later Smokey was pretty scientific about cylinder finishing and never had to resort to Bon Ami ever again.

Many years ago I bought a Escort and it started to smoke the next day. I poured comet down the carb or tbi dont remember. But it did nothing to help stop the smoke. What about salt water? Never tried any hacks like that in decades.
