Extending intake dividers

Post by jamie »

I have seen Larry Meaux weld up to an inch onto an intake runner divider. Is there any reason not to use 1/4 aluminum plate and weld that to the dividers instead? Then port and shape it accordingly? Thanks

Hard to get at to get enough penetration to prevent cracking. Laying beads gives you full access.

I rem seeing an intake that someone made thick extensions(narrowed at weld edge) and then welded them, was a 4150 intake. Don't rem if it was a book or thread somewhere but i rem seeing the before and after. I don't see a problem if done right, would prob use thicker than 1/4 but still narrow the weld area.

People have said or repeated many times about a thin diy alum divider breaking up but some single planes came with a thin divider. Suppose we may never know all the factors to the diy one that broke. If not for modern fuel issues, epoxy has even been used.

Also it should be noted if you extend the runners the plenum will be smaller.

To extend a divider into the plenum area, I use 3/16" or 1/4" aluminum all the time.
Cut almost exactly to size and welded in place, then finished.

I am almost sure it is a personal preference as to how it is done.

I bought a mig welder with alum spool gun to do this mod on a intake after being quoted enough to buy the welder. Never did finish that intake tho but that welder came in real handy n saved me a ton. Kick myself for not buying one sooner but missed the mig part of my classes and seen too many friends fail at mig. A lot easier than the other types of welding.

Spool gun is still new in the box on a shelf next to me LOL maybe I'll finish that intake one day

i've done it both those ways above ,
and a 3rd way just using Epoxy AB Sticks

i prefer just Tig-welding extending Runner dividers , and extend welds a little more to make sure i achieve
the final Runner lengths i want .... same thing with Epoxy AB Sticks

After the "extended " additions are tig welded, I take an acetylene torch and blacken the entire area ... then ad oxy and heat that entire area until the soot disappears to anneal it, then cover it with cardboard so it cools slowly.

How did the A-B Epoxy hold up? did it break off at all. I see back in the day John Lingenfelter did that to a BBC Holley single plane intake manifold and looked like he picked up some power using just epoxy. Would it be a good idea to pin it at the floor and into the runners?

Larry, do runner extensions this long have any side effects like needing to stagger jet, engine wanting more spacer area or a reduction in reversion pulse dampening that you have seen?

it didn't need any Jet staggering , mostly because 2 Spacer's added Plenum height
causing largest amount of the Mixture to go downward into the top portion of the Runners .
The Manifold picked up TQ and HP everywhere .

from previous experiences , i was not too afraid to Weldup and extend the Runners that far into each other,
in the 1980's i tested and used Epoxy AB Sticks on C/ED Manifolds ,
i made all 4 Runners touch each other in the floor of the Plenum ,
you would think this Divider blockage might mess up Fuel Distribution,
but the C/ED's ran faster back then , and mostly because of 8" Converters , a 7" Converter was not yet available ??? or only a few had them ??
the C/EDs were pretty heavy in weight , mostly 316cid engine sizes , around 1580lbs to 1590lbs .
